When you’re choosing new windows and doors, it’s natural that the overriding consideration is often aesthetics – and kerb appeal. If you’re making a substantial investment, you need to make sure that you maximise the value that adds to your home; and that means choosing styles that enhance how your home looks.

The slim sightlines of aluminium windows mean they are ideal for sleek, contemporary new builds, but they can also deliver a refreshing update to older style properties without compromising any of their architectural integrity.

Similarly, sliding doors like our S67, S140 and SC156 and our BSF70 bifold are all designed with less frame and more glass and look as good from the inside as they do from the outside.

But aesthetics aren’t the whole story – you also need to consider the functionality of the windows and doors you choose, so that they deliver on practicality as well as style.

For instance, think carefully about the configuration of your windows. Do you want them hinged at the side to open easily for our ventilation like our 58BW casement windows or would it suit your home better to choose a top hinged version like the 58BW TBT which tilts from the top for easy cleaning?

When you are deciding between a sliding door and a bifold, it’s a good idea to think about how you will use the doors to connect your indoor and outdoor spaces. Do you want a slider which allows you to have fewer, bigger panels to frame your view, or is it important for you to be able to open up your living space completely to the garden? If you do choose a bifold, then think about where you will position the traffic door for quick and easy access to the outside and consider whether you want the panels to stack inside or outside when the whole door is open.
